Medicare, medicaid, and ssdi?

thinkin of moving to california, my husbands in ssdi, medicare, medicaid, well there be any time lapse and waiting period and would he have to get a physical again to qualify?

  1. You need to contact the social security office and speak with his case worker.  Get it all arranged so that there doesn't need to be a lapse.  Plus you can possibly pick some physicians for him that will be in your new area.


  2. SSDI and Medicare are federal programs and will transfer with no problems. You'll need to put a change of address with both and there may be a lag getting the check sent to the new address.

    Medicaid is a state program and will not transfer. You'll need to apply with Medi-cal in CA. There will be a delay while the paperwork goes through the system.

    If he has a Medicare Advantage plan and/or a stand-alone Part D plan you'll have to apply for a new plan because these plans are state specific, even if your current company is available in CA.

  3. SSDI and Medicare are Federal programs, so it's not a problem to transfer.  But Medicaid is run on a state by state program, so he'd have to reapply in the new state.
