I understand that I cannot apply for a Medicare card or my tax number until I arrive in Australia and I have an address, I am only going to be staying in each place for about a week is that long enough for me to apply and get everything I need sent back to me? And I would also appreciate if somebody would explain how the Medicare card works for me a British citizen on a working holiday visa?

  1. G'day!

A week isn't enough to get a tax file number. When I applied for mine it took about a month to arrive. A Medicare card is quicker, but still longer than a week.

I'd suggest setting up a Post Office box somewhere you'll be able to get back to. Or find a mate with a mailbox and ask him to forward the letters to you when they arrive.

As a UK citizen on a WHV you're entitled to a Medicare card during your stay in Australia. Print this form out and fill it out when you get here:

Take it to your nearest Medicare office, there're a couple in each city. They'll want to see your passport and visa, then they may be able to issue you a card on the spot, or they'll send it in the post.

Carry your Medicare card with you wherever you go. You don't need it for medical treatment, but it makes things faster and simpler. In Australia, some (hard to find) doctors practice what's called "bulk billing" - this means you need only show your Medicare card, and don't have to pay any extra for the visit.

In any case, Medicare is no substitute for good travel insurance. Make sure you get it.

Have a great time here mate!
