Is it possible to write off medical expenses for a person who is on SSD to write it off on taxes the following year? The only source of income is SSD, and the person is disable thus unable to work. She has worked all of her life and needs to know what may be beneficial in paying for the medical expenses that medicare does not cover. She also does not qualify for medicare. Is it possible to file something for tax purposes?

Thank you in advance.

  1. SSDI does not qualify her for any special tax treatment. She'll be able to claim medical expenses on schedule A above the 7.5% AGI amount.

She should look into getting a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans cover much of what Medicare does not cover and they have a low or even a $0 premium in most areas. They are available to people on Medicare that are under 65. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in her area to find the best plan. There is no extra charge using an agent.
