Question:

Medication for ADHD?

My 8 year old son takes medication for ADHD, it is only required during the school year for attention issues. Is there a medication that he can be prescribed that will not require doctor visits every month. This ADHD is not going to be healed in the next year or two and I can not afford to take him to see the doctor every month and pay the $80 doctor visit as well as pay anywhere from $40 - $120 for his medication. If anyone knows of any medication he could be taking instead of a controlled substance it is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Serious answers only please!

  1. I beleive strattera is not a stimulant like adderal, ritalin, and desoxyn, so it might be less controlled than stimulant drugs, which are schedule II. Drugs that are scheduled lower like 3,4 and 5 require fewer doctor visits.

From the strattera website: Lack of abuse potential

Strattera has not shown potential for abuse. It is a non-controlled prescription medication.

    Phone-in refills

Strattera is not a controlled substance, so you can get phone-in refills between doctor visits.

There is no generic version, so it may be expenesive.

  2. I am not knowledgeable enough about ADHD medications to suggest a generic alternative, but you might check out the link below. Many pharmaceutical manufacturers will provide medication at greatly reduced cost or no cost if you qualify.
