Medicean Man in with giant strides at the Scarborough Stakes, St Leger
Medicean man has been in an almost perfect form at Ascot, which he is extremely fond of, to an extent that it can easily qualify for being his most favourite track.
Jeremy Gask, Medicean Man’s trainer, is wishing for the consistency in the horse’s form for listed success in the Scarborough Stakes on the opening day of the St Leger meeting.
Ascot is definitely a preference for Medicean Man but it is not the case that he has performed terribly at Doncaster.
Medicean Man did win a six-furlong maiden at Doncaster when he was a three-year-old but has been defeated there in three races since then.
He has been quite a show this season as the five-year-old won two of his last three starts and finished an unfortunate second in the other at the Berkshire track.
His gradual progress has been noticed and appreciated by his connections. The trainer does not hold the track and the cheek pieces as the mere responsible factors for Medicean Man’s drastic improvement.
"He's in great form and loves Ascot. I'm hoping it is the drop back to five furlongs and the addition of cheek pieces that have brought about the improvement and not just the track, but we'll see”, said the trainer.
For the St Leger, Medicean Man would be ridden by Richard Hughes. The five-year-old horse is already highly capable, nearly top of the line handicap sprinter.
"Medicean Man has made giant strides in competitive handicaps this summer, looking a shade unlucky when narrowly denied at Ascot last month, and like many similar types before him in the sprinting division, should make a bold bid to bridge the class gap...",
Gask added.
Gask is not being represented only by Medicean Man in the upcoming races, in fact participating from the same stable, but not as glamorous, is Anne Of Kiev whose main target is the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday.
Being comfortable with a certain track is obviously the case with not one but many other horses but for Medecean Man it is essential to ‘grow out’ of the comfort zone so the he can step into Group company in future.
