  2. Your hierarchy doesn't make much sense...a lord and knight are the same thing, and a peasant and serf are the same, but from different systems, hence, not one above the other, but equals really.

    except I think a peasant was free, and a serf was tied to his lord's land, neither was the peasant ABOVE the serf.

    A Knight was a Lord, and there were many other titles for lords

    It was a Lord over a Vassal, and a Vassal swore allegiance to his Lord.  Thus, the Count/Earl was Lord over the Knight, but Vassal to the Marquis, etc.
