what comes first manors or castles in England.

Castles as the country was united the need for the battlements became less so the rich had to find other ways to show off. Although early castle complexes would have contained a number of buildings within their walls including an early manor house of sorts.

I'd say manors. Manor houses were just the houses of the rich located in the lands they owned. Castles existed for a different reason.

I'd say the manorial system dates back to Roman times whereas Castles are more of a 10th century invention.

I would guess castle as the land had to be defended--you have to have peace before a manor could be made
