Medina, Standlick and Andino among Round 2 winners at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing news
Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, Australia’s Perth Standlick and America’s Kolohe Andino were among the 12 surfers to claim success in their respective heats during Round 2 (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2013 Quiksilver Saquarema
Prime, which continued at Itauna beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Thursday, May 23, 2013.
The conditions at the main event site turned out to be quite extreme on the second day of competition, with the surfers staring at a daunting task of taming the heavy six-to-eight foot waves while competing for survival.
Medina walked away with the boasting rights for putting on the most impressive performances of the day.
The Brazilian surfer found himself pitted against fellow compatriot Tomas Hermes, Ireland’s Glenn Hall and Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam in the seventh heat of Round 7.
Medina picked up a series of modest scores before locking a wave to unleash a great combination of well-controlled turns, thus earning a 9.83 for the effort.
He went on to add an additional 9.20 points to his account, thus moving to a near-perfect heat-total of 19.03 points. With none of his rivals managing to threaten his lead, he eventually claimed a comprehensive win to advance to Round 3, i.e. no-elimination
Round of 24.
“I’m so happy I caught good waves again,” said Medina later in the day. “Today (Thursday) it’s big and I used a bigger board. I hope it’s smaller tomorrow because it’s hard to compete in these types of conditions. There’s a really strong current and I had
to keep paddling to stay where the lefts were breaking.”
Standlick was pretty impressive in his Round 2 heat as well, managing to hold his own against the likes of Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro, Caio Ibelli and Hawaii’s Ezekiel Lau.
The Australian surfer got off to a solid start, scoring an impressive 8.17 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 6.50-point later in the heat to finish with a heat-total of 14.67 points, thus securing his place in the next round.
Andino was another standout performer in Round 2, despite the challenging surfing conditions prevailing at Itauna beach.
Locking horns with fellow countryperson Evan Geiselman, Australia’s Mitchel Coleborn and Peru’s Cristobal de Col in the fifth heat, the young American sensation did not take too long to assert his dominance over his rivals.
Collecting a 9.63 and 6.50 off his best-two waves, Andino registered a two-wave total of 16.13 points. The score remained unbeatable until the end to see him through into the next round.
Other surfers to clinch victory in their respective Round 2 heats and thus advance to the third round included Brazil’s Bernardo Miranda, his compatriot Jadson Andre, Australia’s Heath Joske and America’s Tanner Gudauskas.
