Meeker Avenue and Kelli Got Frosty win their respective New York Stallion Series Stakes
Trainers Dominick A. Schettino and Rudy R. Rodriguez with their runners, Meeker Avenue and Kelli Got Frosty won their respective divisions of the New York Stallion Series Stakes at Aqueduct race track on 11 November, 2012.
2-year-old gelded son of Read the Footnotes under jockey Ramon Dominguez after a thriller nosed out stretch rival Laila’s Jazz to win the $125,000 Great White Way Division after being sent as the 3 to 5 choice for connections.
It was the 2-year-old, Stoneless, who broke swiftly and got things underway as he opened up a four length lead at the start, and went on to carve fractions for the opening quarter mile in 21.95 seconds and half mile in 45.33 seconds.
Meeker Avenue at that point was hemmed in along the rail, and was settled in second, allowed Stoneless to have as much space as he could at the top.
The picture entirely changed after rounding off the turn for home, when Ramon Dominguez, saw a narrow opening on the inside of Laila’s Jazz, and prompted Meeker Avenue to make his bid, as the duo engaged into a hard fought battle in the final furlong, but
in the end Meeker Avenue prevailed.
It took him 1 minute and 10.96 seconds to cover six furlongs, and post his second career victory in as many starts.
"He's still maturing and learning," said Dominick Schettino, who trains Meeker Avenue for MeB Racing Stables and Brooklyn Boyz Stables. "He'll get better with more racing. He was in tight the whole way. It's a learning process, but he ran a h**l of a race."
In the division for juvenile fillies, the 2-year-old dark brown filly by Frost Giant, Kelli Got Frosty downed the $125,000 Fifth Avenue division, and landed the race over the even money favourite, P J’s Supergo, to win her second race in her fourth start.
"I tried to take my time before I made my move," said winning jockey Joel Rosario. "She's a pretty horse and she does everything right."
Out of Jump Start mare Nick’s Honor, Kelli Got Frosty bounced back to post a half-length victory in the New York Stallion Series Stakes on the back of a third place finish in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes on 20 October, at Belmont Park.
