Meeting new people in England.?

I am thinking about moving to England within the next year. I'm single, and I don't know anyone in England so I will pretty much be a little fish in a big pond. I'm thinking about London, or some where in the South of London. What is a good way to meet people (friends) and also, how would I get into the dating scene?
