Meeting others while travelling?

Question

I am thinking of going travelling around the world for 6 months from Jan 09 to June 09. I think I will try to meet fellow travellers in hostels, I have looked at the travel lounge website and see its full of hostels which have like 6/7/8/9/10 bed dorms. Does anyone think that is the best way to meet people and make friends because I think a large part of the trip/experience is actually meeting new people and hanging out wit them, making friendships and spending your time together.

Does anyone think this is where you would meet most people and am I right in thinking that most people are friendly as they too want to meet others?

Hey hey!!  Good on you mate!!

i traveled through Europe by myself for 4 months and Asia for 1 month and I met plenty of people just staying in hostels the whole trip.  You hang out in the common area and you are bound to meet all sorts of people.  Everyone is usually friendly b/c they are in the same boat you are... they want to meet people as well.  Im a female and i had no problems meeting people.  Im a friendly person, so im not afraid to walk up to someone and talk to them and then hang out with them.  You will meet people and end up hanging out with them for a few hours to maybe a few days, to even a week or so.  I usually stayed in teh cheaper hostels and yes, dorms is a good place to meet people.  Just hang out in the common area and people will come up to you or you can go up to them.  If you enjoy playing cards, bring a deck, good way to meet people and a great way to start conversations, ask em if they want to play a game or what not.... if you play the guitar, people tend to flock to those that play the guitar... if you smoke, leave the cigs out, people tend to ask others for a smoke.... and if you're attractive girls/guys will flock to  you making things easier.  Have fun and most of all, be careful with the opposite s*x, you never know if they are there to take your stuff... heard tons of horror stories while traveling about people getting mugged or pick pocketed by females mostly while seducing the guys....
