Megan Clemens earns Girls 200yard freestyle gold – West Virginia High School State Championships
Megan S Clemens of NHS overpowered her competitors by earning gold medal of the Girls 200yard freestyle on third day of the West Virginia High School State Championships for Boys and Girls in Morgantown on February 18.
Clemens faced strong resistance from Katie Murto of MHS, but managed to overwhelm her efforts over the finishing end for gold medal. She posted a time of 1 minute and 56.59 seconds for the title. Her closest competitor, Murto stayed just 0.45 seconds behind and reached the victory stand for silver medal with an effort of 1 minute and 57.04 seconds.
The third spot of the race was secured by Abby M Hendershot of PKHS, who stayed nearly two seconds slower from her former finisher and clocked a time of 1 minute and 59.35 seconds.
Next was the Girls 200yard Individual Medley (IM), where Kelsey A Ferguson of Weir proved her eligibility for the crown of the event by posting a time of 2 minutes and 10.91 seconds.
She was followed by Madisyn M Lyons of WIN, who was almost half body length slower and produced an effort of 2 minutes and 12.51 seconds for silver medal. Lyons remained nearly six seconds ahead of Rachael J Adams of MHS, who pocketed bronze medal of the event with an effort of 2 minutes and 18.02 seconds.
The third event of the session was 50yard freestyle in Girls corner, where Samantha Hall of EHS experienced strong battle from Maggie Miller of BUHS. Both swimmers remained engage in a neck-to-neck race throughout the shortest freestyle event and ended in a draw for gold medal with a fascinating effort of 24.89 seconds.
The duo of gold medallists was trailed by Alyssa K Morris of CMHS, who remained just 0.19 seconds slower and secured the podium for third position by completing her swim in a time of 25.08 seconds. EHS’s Delaney Johnson was just 0.02 seconds behind Morris and settled fourth with an effort of 25.10 seconds.
The arena acknowledged tremendous struggles of all podium finishers in their respective events whereas the championship concluded after the completion of all listed events.
