Meghan Hawthorne captures Women’s 400m IM gold – US Open Swimming Championships
Meghan Hawthorne of Rattler Swim Club captured gold medal of the Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on third day of the 2012 US Open Swimming Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Thursday, August 9.
Hawthorne, who qualified into the playoff as strongest swimmer for gold medal, met expectations of her supporters as she dominated the final round.
With her unstoppable efforts, the 20-year-old Hawthorne went full rampant in the distant IM discipline and made her way to the finishing wall for gold medal with a timing of 4 minutes and 40.43 seconds.
Her title claiming effort remained 0.47 seconds faster from Sarah Henry of Aggie Swim Club, who followed her on the medal rostrum for silver medal by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 40.90 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Rebecca Mann of Clearwater Aquatics, who stayed 2.17 seconds slower from her former finisher and touched the finishing blockade for bronze medal by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 43.07 seconds.
Mann was chased by Celina Li of Pleasanton Seahawks, who stayed one and a half body length behind and settled on the finishing blockade as fourth fastest swimmer by reporting a time of 4 minutes and 44.29 seconds.
Li was chased by Allysa Vavra of Indiana University, who was 1.14 seconds apart and proved her audacity for fifth fastest spot of the event by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 45.43 seconds.
Vavra was traced by Courtney Otto of Star Swimming-NT, who remained full body length apart and ended her swim in a time of 4 minutes and 46.33 seconds for sixth position.
The 19-year-old Otto remained almost three body lengths ahead of Jana Mangimelli of SwimAtlanta-GA, who surfaced on the finishing wall as seventh fastest swimmer by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 49.15 seconds.
Subsequently, Mangimelli was traced by Lyndsay de Paul of Una MVN-CA, who stayed 1.68 seconds slower from her and reported a time of 4 minutes and 50.83 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Hawthorne expressed happiness after clinching gold medal of the eight-lap IM event.
