Mehdy Metella seizes Men’s 100m freestyle gold – US Open Swimming Championships
Mehdy Metella of France seized gold medal of the Men’s 100m freestyle on day one of the 2012 US Open Swimming Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Tuesday, August 7.
The 20-year-old Metella upset his challengers with his tremendous form in the playoff of the 100m discipline. He made his way into the final as third best finisher but with his relentless efforts, he paved his way to the finishing end for gold medal.
Metella stayed just two arm-strokes ahead of his following swimmer and occupied gold medal of the event by producing a time of 49.18 seconds.
His title claiming effort remained only 0.17 seconds slower from Kenneth To of Australia, who stepped on the medal rostrum for silver medal by reporting a time of 49.35 seconds.
The Australian swimmer was followed by his compatriot, Matthew Abood, who suffered a loss of 0.42 seconds from his former finisher and transpired on the finishing blockade as fourth fastest swimmer with a timing of 49.77 seconds.
Similarly, Abood was chased by Kyle Owens of Auburn University, who stayed just 0.01 seconds slower from outsmarting the bronze medallist and hit the wall with a timing of 49.78 seconds for fourth position.
Owens was traced by Tyler Reed of Southern Kentucky Swim Club, who stayed half a body length behind and emerged on the wall as fifth fastest swimmer by submitting a time of 50.18 seconds.
Reed was chased by Michael Wynalda of University of Michigan, who stayed 0.11 seconds slower and secured sixth position of the race by touching the wall with an effort of 50.29 seconds.
Subsequently, Wynalda remained 0.14 seconds ahead of Derek Toomey of Minnesota Aquatics, who completed his swim in seventh best place by making his way to the wall with a timing of 50.43 seconds.
Toomey was followed by Giles Smith of University of Arizona, who failed to bring any competition to his challengers and ended eighth in the race by clocking a time of 50.96 seconds.
In addition, the crowd applauded for gruelling efforts of Metella in the two-lap freestyle event at the prize ceremony of the event.
