Mehmet Scholl hails Gomez, after the striker’s match winning performance against Netherlands.
Mario Gomez was the subject of heavy criticism from the former Bayern Munich midfielder. Despite scoring a goal against Portugal, Scholl accused him of being lazy and not doing enough running for his team. Gomez’s work rate was
heavily criticised.
Two days after that scathing attack on his performance, the Bayern Munich striker came up with a match winning performance to silences his critics.
The 41-year old however, was happy to eat the humble pie, as he lauded Gomez’s performance against Netherlands. He noticed a huge change in the striker’s game, as Mario was seen closing down opposition midfielders/defenders and
was also found deep in his own half defending.
"He had a wonderful game. He played with so much passion,” the former Bayern man is quoted as saying in an interview.
Scholl states that his seat in the stadium gives him a perfect picture of the team unlike the supporters, and on Wednesday he saw many positive changes in the whole team. The Bayern legend reckons he was right to criticise the
striker’s performance in the first game, because he could see things which the others were not able to.
"I stand up and see how the attack is being run from above. The audience do not have this perspective. I've seen things in the first game that others cannot see,” he added.
The performance against the Dutch was a perfect one from a striker’s point of view, not just because of his spectacular strikes but due to his work rate and determination as well.
"Gomez had a wonderful game. Not just in front of goal, but in terms of passion. I've seen the first game, and things weren't as good. But [Wednesday's] was perfect - from beginning to end,’ he further added.
Scholl knows that after his criticism the German hit-man was a completely different player, he looked nothing like his former self. Being a coach the former Bayern legend timed his comments perfectly as they brought the best out
of Mario, who was fired up since the first minute and thrown his name in the mix for the Golden boot.
