When does duplication of the chromosomes occur during meiosis? What is the importance of this replication?

  1. Duplication of chromosomes does not occur in meiosis, but in interphase which is not part of meiosis.  When the 2 divisions of cells occur  during meiosis you can get a haploid number of chromosome in each of the s*x cells.  This is important because when the s*x cells unit they return to the normal number of chromosomes per cells, diploid


  2. Replication of genetic material occurs during S-phase (replication or synthesis).

    Replication is important necaues at the end of meiosis you will have four cells, each containing one single copy of the genome (remember in humans we normally carry two copies of the genome in each cell). If replication does not occurr there will not be enough copies of the genome to fill four cells. This will leave some cells missing genetic material.
