Melanie Margalis clinches Women’s 400m IM title: Day Two – 2011 USA Swimming Sectional
Melanie Margalis of Saint Petersburg clinched the Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) title on the second day of the 2011 USA Swimming Sectionals, in Athens, Georgia, United States, on Friday, July 15.
The 19-year-old Margalis impressed the arena with her gold winning effort, as she improved her timing by almost thirteen seconds and pocketed the title in a time of 4 minutes and 46.94 seconds. She was the eighth fastest qualifying swimmer of the 400m event,
as she clocked a time of 4 minutes and 59.63 seconds in the preliminary rounds.
She was followed by Amber C McDermott of SA, who stayed almost six seconds behind her and touched the wall in a second fastest time of 4 minutes and 52.41 seconds for the silver medal. The 18-year-old McDermott was 1.55 seconds away from her following swimmer,
Meredith C King of LAK, who reached the podium for the bronze medal by submitting an effort of 4 minutes and 53.76 seconds.
Moments later, Jana L Mangimelli of SA secured the fourth fastest spot of the 400m event by out-touching her closest competitor, Caty A Hulsey of Swim Macon, with a difference of only 0.05 seconds. Mangimelli secured the fourth position in 4 minutes and
53.83 seconds to overwhelm Hulsey’s effort of 4 minutes and 53.88 seconds. Shannon N Vreeland of ABSC, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the final, failed to sustain her top spot in the 400m IM and settled on the finishing wall as the sixth position
holder in a time of 4 minutes and 57.69 seconds.
Katherine A Mills of Swim MAC Carolina was the seventh fastest swimmer of the IM event, as she posted a time of 4 minutes and 59.45 seconds. Courtney E Peters of Marietta Marlins was the last swimmer to conclude her race, as she produced a time of 5 minutes
and 02.87 seconds.
In addition, all swimmers received a huge round of applause from the audience for their commendable swims, while the winners were awarded medals after the session.
