Melanie Margalis wins Women’s 200m IM prelims – US Open Swimming Championships
Melanie Margalis of Saint Petersburg won top spot in the qualification rounds of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on fifth day of the 2012 US Open Swimming Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Saturday, August 11.
The 20-year-old Margalis demonstrated her stupendous efforts in the 200m discipline as she was full determined to seize the fastest qualification spot of the race.
With her persistent efforts, she remained more than a body length ahead of her closest challenger and tapped the finishing wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 13.85 seconds for first position.
She was followed by Meghan Hawthorne of Rattler Swim Club, who remained 0.57 seconds slower from her former finisher and transpired on the finishing blockade as second best swimmer with a timing of 2 minutes and 14.42 seconds.
Hawthorne was chased by Sophie Smith of Great Britain, who stayed full body length apart and finished third in the IM event by producing a time of 2 minutes and 15.36 seconds.
Fourth fastest qualification spot of the event was secured by Sarah Henry of Aggie Swim Club, who remained just 0.09 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and hit the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 15.45 seconds.
Henry was traced by Erika Erndl of T2 Aquatics-FL, who was 0.31 seconds behind and finished fifth in the event with an effort of 2 minutes and 15.76 seconds.
Subsequently, Erndl stayed 0.46 seconds ahead of Merritt Krawczyk of Penn State University, who secured sixth best spot of the event by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 16.22 seconds.
Seventh finest spot of the swim was obtained by Celina Li of Pleasanton Seahawks, who was only 0.08 seconds behind and posted a time of 2 minutes and 16.30 seconds.
Li remained 0.10 seconds faster from Anna Senko of Bluefish Swim Club, who finished eighth in the discipline by reporting an effort of 2 minutes and 16.40 seconds.
In addition, Margalis was happy with her performance in the preliminary rounds and was hopeful that she would be able to achieve the same in the playoff.
