Melanie Oudin of America registered her second upset on the trot when she overpowered the 32-years-old Slovenian contestant, Petra Rampre, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. The match was played at the clay courts of Charleston, USA during
the final qualifying round of the Family Circle Cup.
It was an encounter that took an hour and 32 minutes for the 20-years-old American to register back-to-back victories after losing eight matches in a row; must have eased a lot of pressure off her and more importantly confirmed
her spot in the main round draw of the tournament.
The local contestant had a lot of home support that cheered for her on every successful rally. However, the visitor broke serve against the run of play and took the lead but it didn’t proved beneficial for her. In midst of the
opening set, Oudin took control from the start and never looked to be in any sort of trouble at all.
She forced her opponent in committing several unforced errors and finally got rewarded for her supreme play in the sixth game; winning a critical breakthrough and consolidating her position with a serve hold. Another breakthrough
in the eighth game gave her the lead of 5-3 and she spilt just a couple of points in the final serve game before grabbing the first set triumph.
Rampre was poor in the second set; lost a couple of serve games on the trot that gifted a resounding lead of 3-0 to her opponent. The American lost one breakpoint in the fourth game that depleted her lead to 3-1 but she did well
to hold on to the second breakthrough she had earned in the start.
The pressure was mounting over the Slovenian who failed to deliver; lost the third breakpoint of the set to the local and went down 2-5 in the set. The American spared just a single point for her opponent before confirming the
main round spot.
She will be up against the tenth seed Spanish tennis icon, Anabel Medina Garrigues, in the first round of the tournament. It will be interesting to see if she can manage the third upset in a row.
