Melanie Radicke wins Women's 1500m freestyle gold: Day one – German SC Nationals
Melanie Radicke of SV Halle earned the title of Women's 1500m freestyle on the foremost day of the 2011 German Short Course Nationals on Thursday, November 24 in Wuppertal.
The 18-year-old Radicke faced strong resistant from Leonie Antonia Beck of SV Wurzburg 05 in the sixty-lap freestyle event.
Radicke had a considerable start and she completed her first round in a fastest time of 29.02 seconds. She remained 0.43 seconds ahead of Beck, who covered the equivalent distance with an effort of 29.45 seconds.
The duo continued their smothering efforts in the remaining laps of the swim, where they tried to escape each other for the finest spot. The 14-year-old Beck managed a slight lead of 0.11 seconds from Radicke in the initial 500 meters of the race, as she
clocked a time of 5 minutes and 19.87 seconds.
Radicke remained slightly away from her and covered the same distance in a time of 5 minutes and 19.98 seconds.
Nevertheless, the 18-year-old proved her mettle for the top spot as she completed her initial half of the race in a top ranked time of 8 minutes and 35.02 seconds. Beck remained 0.97 seconds behind her former finisher and concluded her initial half with
an effort of 8 minutes and 35.99 seconds.
Both compatriots accelerated their efforts in the second half of the race, where Radicke managed to out-touch her competitor on the finishing end for gold medal. She posted a phenomenal time of 16 minutes and 15.49 seconds for the title of 1500m discipline.
With her gold winning efforts, she remained nearly half a minute slower from improving the national record of 15 minutes and 43.31 seconds, owned by Petra Schneider of SC Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1982.
The gold medallist remained 0.23 seconds ahead of Beck, who followed her on the podium for silver medal by producing an effort of 16 minutes and 15.72 seconds. Beck was trailed by Natalie Charlos of Swim-Team Elmshorn, who remained 8.05 seconds behind and
stepped on the podium for bronze medal with a timing of 16 minutes and 23.77 seconds.
In addition, the winners collected their medals for their undisputed efforts, after the conclusion of session.
