Melanie Schlanger earns Women’s 100m freestyle gold – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Melanie Schlanger of Southport Olympic Swimming Club earned gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle playoff on day six of the ongoing 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Tuesday, March
20.
With her gold claiming effort in the double lap freestyle event, the 25-year-old Schlanger has confirmed her spot in the Australian team, which will compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Her stupendous effort placed her prominently ahead of her challengers and she stepped on the victory stand for gold medal by posting a time of 53.85 seconds. She was followed by Cate Campbell, who won top position in the semi-final but failed to withstand
Schlanger’s effort in the playoff and ended second with the timing of 54.01 seconds.
The 19-year-old Campbell was chased by Brittany Elmslie of Nudgee Brothers and Yolane Kukla of St Peters Western Swim Club, who secured a joint third finish in the event. Elmslie and Kukla were just 0.07 seconds slower from their former finisher and settled
on the finishing wall for third position by completing her swim in a time of 54.08 seconds.
Next was the Men’s 200m backstroke playoff, where Mitch Larkin of St Peters Western Swim Club overpowered his challengers and proved his audacity for gold medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 57.90 seconds.
With his impeccable swim, he stayed 0.42 seconds ahead of Tigersharks’ Matson Lawson, who secured the podium for silver medal by producing an effort of 1 minute and 58.32 seconds. The 19-year-old Lawson enjoyed a lead of 0.26 seconds over his teammate, Joshua
Beaver, who posted a time of 1 minute and 58.58 seconds for bronze medal of the discipline.
The fourth position of the discipline was claimed by Ashley Delaney of Nunawading, who ended his swim in a time of 1 minute and 58.87 seconds. Hayden Stoeckel of Berri emerged on the finishing blockade as fifth fastest swimmer as he hit the wall with the
timing of 1 minute and 59.01 seconds.
The session ended after the completion of all listed events whereas the winners were awarded received medals for their remarkable sprints.
