Melanie Schlanger wins Women’s 100m freestyle title: Day two – USA Swimming Sectionals, Mount Hood
Melanie Schlanger of Unattached-IE won the gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle meet on day two of the 2011 USA Swimming Sectionals. The event is taking place in Mount Hood, Oregon.
Schlanger, who qualified as the top fastest swimmer into the finals, claimed the title of the event in an astounding time of 55.39 seconds. She was followed by Leticia Lelli of Sun Devil Aquatics, who followed her on the podium for the silver medal, by submitting a time of 56.81 seconds.
Lelli entered the finals as the third fastest swimmer but with her commendable effort, she managed to out-touch the second qualifying swimmer, Stephanie North, with a difference of 0.27 seconds. North of Boise YMCA Swim stepped on the podium for the bronze medal, as she touched the finishing wall in a time of 57.08 seconds.
North’s team-member, the 21-year-old Amber Boucher followed her preceding swimmers on the finishing wall, with a timing of 57.28 seconds. Boucher’s swim was only 0.20 seconds slower than her team-member, whereas, she edged out her closest competitor, Shara Stafford of Foothills Swim T, with a difference of 0.19 seconds. Stafford completed her swim in the fifth best place, as she reported on the concluding wall in a time of 57.47 seconds. Kelli Benjamin of Gold Medal Swim was the sixth best swimmer of the two-lap race, as she submitted a time of 57.75 seconds.
Moments later, Kathry Kinnear of Issaquah Swim Te settled on the finishing wall as the seventh fastest swimmer of the event. She stayed just 0.14 seconds behind Benjamin and concluded her swim in a time of 57.89 seconds. She was followed by Lily G Ramirez of Foothills Swim T, who secured the eighth fastest spot of the discipline, by ending her swim in a time of 58.40 seconds.
Schlanger expressed happiness over her victory and added that she will train hard to improve her timings in future events. In addition, the podium finishers collected medals and accolades for their praiseworthy swims in the 100m freestyle meet.
