  1. Melanoma isn't always fatal.  The difference between melanoma and other turmors (such as basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas) is that melanomas tend to grow downward into the skin tissue, which can put tumor cells in close contact with the blood stream and can make surgical treatment more difficult.  If the tumor cells get into the bloodstream or lymphatic system, they can travel throughout the body (metastasize).  If it metastasizes to the brain, it's usually in the later stages of metastatic melanoma.  I would wager that it would then be fatal in almost all cases.

  2. Superficial melanomas that are treated quickly are 99+% curable. The cure rate goes down precipitously if the cancer has been allowed to spread. Any type of malignancy spread to the brain is a dire situation.

  3. There are two main types of brain cancer. Primary brain cancer starts in the brain. Metastatic brain cancer starts somewhere else in the body and moves to the brain. Brain tumors can be benign, with no cancer cells, or malignant, with cancer cells that grow quickly.
