Melatonin 300mg?

I hear some people take 300mg of this. Why then do most doctors and internet website say you should only take 9mg and no more then that?

I can't sleep and can't STAY ASLEEP. would 9mg be a waste? Should I go for the 300mg?

  1. i dont think anyone out there takes 300mg of melatonin.  I think you are triing to say 300Mcg or .30mg of melatonin.  In order to take 300mg of melatonin in the pills they have you would have to consume nearly 50 pills it has been proven that taking 3mg of melatonin is just as good as taking 5 mg.

    side affects of taking alot of melatonin include headaches, nausea, next-day grogginess or irritability, hormone fluctuations, vivid dreams or nightmares[2] and reduced blood flow...   these are more common the more melatonin you take expecially at doses over 3mg per day.  So in conclusion it is best just to stick with taking a small dose of melatonin at night maybe 1mg, 2mg or maybe start out with 300Mcgs of melatonin and work your way up from there if it has no effects on your body.

    Addition to the above if you still need help sleeping try taking Valerian root it is a natural sleep aid.

I take 1mg of Melatonin 1, I purchased it at the local health store, I work varying shifts and my sleep patterns are irregular.  I could only sleep a couple of hours at a time, the first time I took melatonin 1, it knocked me out and  was able to sleep undisturbed throughout the night and awoke feeling very refreshed.  Hope this helps

  3. the high dosage of melatonin (300mg) is done under supervision only for cancer treatment or research.

    taking melatonin has to consider 2 factors, "spread out" and "steady state".

    "spread out" has to do with timed release. due to short half-life (35-50 min) take the medicine 3 mg every 2 hr or if awaken.

    "steady state" has to do with conditioning your body. the pre-heating of the oven reached steady state after 15 min. the house get warm after one hour heating. for a complicated human body it will take longer time depends on individual. for me, taking zoloft it takes 7 months to cause diarrhea and insomnia, and takes 2 years to cause blurred vission. taking melatonin takes 9 months to improve sleeping for an extra two hours. ( 2 x 3mg a night)

    the good thing is melatonin is not habbit forming like the prescription sleeping pills.
