Melatonin...?

I am a 54 yr old woman and take melatonin to induce sleep. I take up to 20mm each night. Since it is a hormone, are there any negative side effects to taking this over time. I have been taking it for about 10 months. Thank you.

  1. I agree with researching it on drugs.com, I did that when my mother asked me about it, and found that it would react negatively with some of her meds.  You should always research anything you take thoroughly, to see possible side effects and drug interactions.  This includes "natural" substances, just because something is "natural" doesn't make it safe.  Keep in mind, marijuana is natural too.

  2. Unless you are allergic, nope.

    :)

  3. There's always a limit for everything....

20mg every night & also for 10 months will have negative effects in the future if not now....For instance now there's no way you could go to sleep without taking them and your body would go into withdrawl (same as with Narcotics) if you try to do so...

So first off talk with your doctor about the dosage & time period you're taking Melatonin, then he/she would tell you how to cut it down.....

Checkout the link below to find out more about the pros&cons of using melatonin...

    Good Luck

  4. I don't know if this helps but this is a website I go to find out information on my medication. You can also check medicines that may counter act with each other.

  5. Keep taking it as melatonin has been described as the pacemaker of the aging clock in humans.  See the discussion on Melatonin under Hormones in http://www.lef.org/anti-aging/ .
