Melbourne - Lake Mountain?

I really want to bring my kids to Lake Mountain, but the local travel agency is charging us so much for this day trip. Is there any other way we can get there? Is self drive ok? we are first timers to australia and are not familiar with icy roads. Are there any other options you can suggest?

Thanks!

  1. Most Australians don't have much familiarity with icy roads either, so you're not alone in that. I've driven to Lake Mountain and other snow places and I'm from Queensland where we never have icy roads.

In some of the towns on the way, you'll be able to hire snow chains and should get them IF they're recommended at the time you're there - check the snow reports to see if chains are required. We did that (sorry, can't remember the town where we got them) and they give an excellent grip on icy roads. If chains aren't recommended, the roads will be OK without them and as long as you take normal care, you'll be fine.

Take 2 or even 3 COMPLETE (undies, socks, everything) changes of clothes for your children and make sure they have warm, preferably waterproof gloves and warm boots with thick socks and a warm ear covering hat. Take some warm soup to warm the insides as well.

  2. self drive is fine. they are sealed and well maintained roads. simply be careful when driving and you will have no difficulties. if you are planning on visiting during the winter, be sure to take the kids some waterproof pants and gumboots, or hire apres boots there. nothing ends a fun day faster than a cold bum and wet feet! run a simple search and checking out their website would probably be a good idea too, good luck!
