Are Metlink cards like a mulit-ticket card for using all melbourne transport?

So I dont need to buy train tickets, bus tickets ect, i just use a metlink card and it covered everything?

Or do i still need a metlink + train tickets?

Is a metlink card a disposible card. for example if i buy a day card for a certain zone, I can only use it for one day then i have to throw it out?

  1. its called a metcard

they apply for trains, trams and buses, although  your expected to validate (stick in the machine) every time u change vehicle, they come in either zone one or zone 2 and for time frames 2 hours, 1 day a week ect.

for just getting around the city there is also a city saver metcard

if your just using trams theres no real point in buying one as if there are inspectors (rarely) you just step off

not many people buy tickets on public transport unless they are goin on a bus or on a train during the day when the barriers at the city stations are manned

    thats pretty much it,

  2. It depends on the card you buy, go see the person at the station or whatever and ask them what card will get you from here to here etc. does this card apply to buses, etc.

  3. Yes they are for all Melbourne transport i.e.buses, trains and trams.

They are valid for all travel in the greater Melbourne metropolitan area (which is huge: about 60km radius)

Yes they are disposable, paper cards.

The only time you will need to buy train tickets separately is if you are catching a V-line train to take you interstate or out to the country. These are entirely different trains and you can only catch them from one station in the city.

Some of the buses sell their own tickets for local areas but they also sell and accept the metcards ( and most travellers only use metcards).

The only unexpected things you need to know are:

-If you need to buy your ticket on a tram there is only a machine which accepts coins only. They are not cheap, so that it is a lot of coins to carry.

-On Sunday there is one cheap ticket that lasts all day and covers all zones but you can only buy it from big stations that have staff.

You have to go to one of these stations and knock on the window and call them loudly. They hide so that they don't have to sell the cheap ticket.

Say "Sunday Saver"; I think they are about $2.80 by now.

Buy a few at a time because like I said the staff are good at hiding.

-There are undercover ticket people who will wrestle you to the ground if you don't have a ticket.

  4. Melbourne Metlink Public Transport Cards,

are the tickets used for complete access of

    Trains,

    buses,

    trams.

    Tickets can be bought as

-daily (used for one day before expiring)

-weekly (used for 7 days after first validating)

-2 Hourly (for 2 hours then expires)

-monthly (lasts one month after first validation)

-half yearly and full yearly (used by students who catch public transport twice a day, 5 days a week, which lasts  year)

    they are also classified

    as

full fare -  if you are over 18 you buy this

concession - if you are under 15/or any type of student you use this

and once they expire they are useless, many people collect them and use them for random purposes, but mostly they get thrown away.

  5. metlink cards can be used on trains and trams and buses.

you can get tickets for different lengths of time - 2hrs, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly.

you can also get ones that have 10 x 2hr trips.

And you keep your ticket until it expires.
