Melbourne Rebels humiliated by Bulls in first ever match in South Africa, Rod McQueen unhappy
The Melbourne Rebels have been humiliated 47-10 by the Bulls in their first ever match played on South African soil at Loftus Versfeld.
The Rebels made their maiden appearance in the Super Rugby championship this year but could not get any remarkable success. The poor performance of Rebels has left the coach Rod McQueen disappointed.
Collectively this was the ninth defeat for the Rebels in the current Super Rugby championship and they are falling just above the bottom line at the points table. The Rebels have claimed just three victories after 12 outings and are placed on the 14th
position just better than the Lions.
The Rebels, who started off the game quite nicely as they looked offensive in the early minutes, could not keep the momentum later. The Bulls outclassed them quite ruthlessly and scored six tries in the first half. The Rebels were simply chasing the Bulls
throughout the game however they were able to block the flood gates in the second half. The Bulls ended up the first part of the game with 40-3.
Talking to media after match, the Rebels’ coach Rod McQueen declared the defeat very disappointing. He said, “We're obviously very disappointed with the result. Very disappointed with the first half, the amount of dropped ball, and we were made to pay dearly.
That's why they're a good side. They do the simple things very well. Every time we looked like we were in an attacking position in the first half and we dropped the ball, we paid."
The coach argued that it has become the habit of his players to lose the concentration midway. He asserted that his boys started off aggressively but could posses the ball for a longer period in the match.
The Rebels’ skipper, Stirling Mortlock also spoke to the reporters and said, “We found it very tough to get into the game because of turnovers and soft tries in the first half. We certainly have a lot to work on, and we can take it from the second half”.
The Rebels will take on the Cheetahs in their forthcoming clash of Super Rugby on May 21.
