Melbourne Rebels marching well in their first journey of Super Rugby
The applaud less Melbourne Rebels are doing well in the ongoing Super Rugby championship as it is their maiden appearance in the competition.
The Rebels have grabbed two important victories and one bye up to now. They are placed on overall ninth position on the points’ table. The last victory against the Western Force by 26-25 has really boosted their confidence.
The Melbourne Rebels were awarded licence by ARU as fifth domestic team of Australia on January 5, 2010. Despite their first entry in the Super Rugby, they have performed exceptionally well. At the moment, they are right in the middle off Australian teams.
The Rebels were preferred over South African conference Southern Kings regarding their inclusion in the Super Rugby. They have not disappointed the SANZAR arbitration panel that voted for them as the 15th team of the Super Rugby.
Rod Macqueen who was appointed the pioneer coach of the side and he took it as a challenge to build the new unite. Macqueen is happy with the current performance of the side but he wants to take the side further up.
Talking to the reporters about the current situation of his team he said, “We've got to aspire to be much better than that and that's what I want this team to be and that's what the team is at the moment.”
He further argued that the present status was not their ultimate goal and they have to excel beyond it.
He said, “We really haven't come off the field yet satisfied with our performance and I hope the day will come soon where we can actually come back and say we really did everything we really set out to do.”
Rod Macqueen has very successful career as a coach before becoming the instructor of Rebels. He remained the coach of Waratahs during 1991 to 1992 and he trained the national side of Australia in 1995.
He concluded his coaching career with the national side in 2004 when the winning ratio of the team was touching almost the figures of 80%. To acknowledge his services to the Australian Rugby Union he was granted with Joe French Award in 2004.
However, the Rebels have not been applauded by the rugby critics for what they have done in a short span of time. They will face the Highlanders in their next clash on Friday and are hopeful for better results.
Recently, the Rebels are in a fix regarding the retaining of their couple of players Danny Cipriani and Phipps who have been approached with attractive offers. Cipriani by European clubs and Phipps could leave for Waratahs to replace Luke Burgess. The coach
has avoided commenting on the situation but his side is confident that the pair would leave the progressing side.
