A lot of people are saying that Melbourne can`t support 9 clubs. Why not?? They always have in the past. I disagree with people who say Hawks should move to Tassie, Kangas to Gold Coast, etc. What do you guys reckon?

  1. Money talks and ********* walks - it's a sad fact of life. If these 9 clubs can financially survive then yes they will stay but in the past it was built on loyalty/pride/dedication and all those other wonderful attributes we hold so high. Nowadays it is money. It is not often that a player will reduce his salary by half just to remain where he is. I don't know what the Roos' figures are but it seems clear that watching them for free at home isn't keeping them afloat. So no, all 9 clubs won't survive just as Fitzroy, Sth Melbourne didn't.

For a rough comparison look at the NRL - the more national you get it figures that the less local you get. Right?

  2. WELLL it doesnt bother me what they do...but they shuld jus leave it as it is. I used to want a NT team and a Tasie team...to b fair...but then there would b too many clubs n it would stuff up th finals.

  3. d**n MONEY!!!!

That's all it comes down to.

I would freak if my beloved Kangas went to the Gold Coast.

Footy will never be the same for me. :(

  4. As a hawks supporter i'd hate to see the move to Tassie, however, it all comes down to $$$ Financially viable clubs will be around for a long time.

I would hate to see it happen.

  5. i think if the clubs get smart and look outside the usual suspects like pokies, merchandise and membership/sponsorship as their main form of revenue and start making some good business decisions like collingwood have been doing and Carlton started to do this year by owning pubs/clubs,property etc to add to the others then they will be able to sustain them selves in this crowded market

p.s all except north melb probably because i think the boat has sailed on this proud club sorry to say,the area its self is semi industrial with a small population compared to other suburbs plus with the doggies now called the western bulldogs they effectively represent the west (also a traditional breeding ground for north supporters)its hard to attract new interest.

  6. What an interesting question, well done! .    Currently you  would  imagine, as far as survival is concerned in Victoria Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, and Melbourne are safe.  Melbourne included because of their NAME, not in any other comparison to the 3 previously mentioned clubs.  I don't know the exact financial figures, but for the exercise if it cost $7 mil run a club each year, with 10 Victorian Clubs , and being the smallest state in the country, Victoria is  'finding' $70 mil per year ,   The comparison is, 6 interstate club's in 4 states across the country only need to find $42 mil a difference of $28 mil.      Tasmania claims to  not have the "corporate" backing, to  support ONE team in that state .    Leigh Mathews has already questioned if Queensland could support a second team on the Gold Coast, but it really needs to happen, before Victoria is financially crushed.        In Future is it possible, the Roos will locate to the Gold Coast,  St Kilda, could go  regional like Geelong , out of Ballarat, Bulldogs, West of Sydney at Telstra stadium, Hawthorn in Tassy subsidised /sponsored  "off shore" like Collingwood is with Emirates, and Richmond, the Darwin Or Canberra Tigers .?
