Question:

Melbourne in December?

I'm planning to visit Melbourne this December, probably early December. Weather-wise, is it a good time? I've read mixed reviews, some saying it would be too hot around that time, others saying the weather would be good. As for shopping and travellng around the city, since it's going to be close to Christmas, will it be more expensive than other times of the yr?

  1. You're probably getting different reports on the weather because Melbourne is so variable. December is usually pleasant- not as hot as Jan or Feb, but there can be a few hot days here and there.

Around Christmas they usually have a few sales so it won't be more expensive shopping. From Boxing Day onwards they have even bigger sales where you might find a few bargains!

    Travelling/transport costs don't change.

  2. Weather wise, bring everything. We can have warm and hot days. We have had some Christmas' where its been only 13c. Shopping, it depends on where you are going to shop. You can snag a few bargains. Just have to know where and what you want.

  3. Melbourne has strange weather may be hot in the morn & rainy & cold in the arvo or other way around never can tell it is a city with 4 seasons in the one day

transport costs wont be any different from any-other time just more people around

  4. December's a fine time to visit Melbourne. Melbourne's weather is temperamental, but that's one of the idiosyncrasies about Melbourne! Generally December is still fairly cool, but sometimes we get an early heat streak with days of 30 degrees plus. It's not 'too' hot though, and we've got plenty of beaches and pools. It won't necessarily be any more expensive around that time in terms of shopping and travelling.

Sales do occur at other times of the year, but it just means that there aren't as many sales in December. Very good shopping though.

Bridge Road Richmond is always a cheap option for clothes shopping anyway, about 5 minutes by tram from the CBD.
