who seen this live?this fight had it all,2 undeafeted greats in there prime, chavez came in the ring 68-0 & meldrick came in 24-0...chavez had defeated great champions like azavache martinez, rocky lockridge, edwin rosario, roger mayweather(twice),j.l.ramirez,alberto mercedes cortez,& many others..taylor was a olympic gold medalist & became a champion after defeating buddy mcgirt..this fight made my mouth water..this was the best match ive ever seen, taylor dominated chavez by points through the whole fight but chavez toughness damaged taylor permanantly..taylors five tip tap punches to chavez's powerful bombs..sadly taylor after that fight was never the same, taylor was in the hospital for more than 2 weeks & he was urinating pure blood & had a great deal of brain damage..here is some footage from legendary nights http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4fkqBvP244

  1. This was a fight for the ages. It was a shame that Meldrick fought the fight of his life and was denied victory. 2 seconds away no less. This fight took place March 17 1990. If the fight went the distance Meldrick would have won a close decision. I too thought Taylor should have won but not as one sided as the announcers had it. Yes Taylor won another title 147 but never achieved greatness. He and Chavez fought again September 17 1994. Chavez stopped him in 8. Chavez on January 29 1994 suffered his first defeat to Frankie Randall.

  2. It was a good fight but i felt that Meldrick allowed himself to take too much damage at the end,he should have kept away in the last round and simply play it safe, instead he chose to trade punches with chavez all the way and ended up getting knocked down i did not fully agree with steele's decision however he did his job, taylor should have focused on answering the ref's questions instead of looking the other way and he should not have traded punches with chavez in the last round, that style of fighting is risky and it ended up catching up with him later in his life, i watched an interview with taylor in 2002 and the guy could not even make one clear sentence, it is unfortunate.

  3. first of all, i agree with steele's decision to stop the fight, there was about 5 seconds on the clock when the fight was stopped, but when the timekeeper stopped the clock, it stopped at 2 seconds........which means that chavez would have had 5 seconds to finish taylor, and he would have potentially done more damage to taylor..

second, lou duva told taylor that he needed to win the last round to get the decision..........years later duva said in an interview that he told taylor to stay away from jc, that the fight was in the bag, but footage of the corner between 11 & 12 tell a different story.

and lastly, it was probably the fight of the decade, it more than lived up to the hype.
