Melinda Czink edges past Kathrin Woerle into second round – Bell Challenge 2011

In the matchup of the two unseeded contestants, Melinda Czink of Hungary turned over Kathrin Woerle of Germany in the opening round of the Bell Challenge on Monday.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of Quebec, Canada, with the 155th ranked Hungarian coming out as the winner in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, to make it to the second round of the $220,000 WTA (Women’s Tennis
Association) tournament.
It was an exciting game of tennis with a number of momentum swings witnessed from the two sides. Czink took hold of the game earlier and pocketed the opening set to get the better of her German opponent but went through a terrible
slump in the following set to let Woerle back in business. The unseeded German took the second set in an authoritative manner to level the contest at one-all but there was more to come from Czink in the final set. The Hungarian raced passed her opponent in
the set number three to conclude a convincing victory in the end, moving into the second round of the competition.
It was the 33rd victory for Czink in the current WTA season and the second one against Woerle. The last time these two met was way back in 2002, when the Hungarian took down Woerle in straight sets in the quarter-finals
in Bordeaux and her Monday’s victory extended her lead by 2-0 over the German.
Czink delivered 64 per cent of her serve on target but coughed 10 double faults in the matchup to bestow some un-fought points to Woerle. The Hungarian compensated for her unforced-errors by securing 34 out of 53 first serve points
in the contest, with Woerle lagging far behind at 21 out of his 38 points. Both contestants traded five serve breaks each in the matchup but Czink kept on winning the crucial points to come out as the winner in the end.
Czink will take on either Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia or the top seeded Slovakian, Daniela Hantuchova, in the second round for a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
