Melinda Czink stuns Yaroslava Shvedova in the opening battle – Brasil Tennis Cup 2013
A stunning result was witnessed on the opening day of Brasil Tennis Cup as the second seeded Yaroslava Shvedova, suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the world number 100, Melinda Czink, to fall out of the tournament cheaply.
The unseeded Hungarian took 90 minutes to wrap up the three-setter at 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, marching into the pre-quarter-final rounds of the WTA event in Florianopolis, Brazil, on Monday.
The 30-year-old veteran was facing Shvedova for the first time in her professional career and had to take some time before getting the knowhow of her rival’s game. Czink started off in a sloppy manner, dropping her serve in the
very first game of the match and letting the second seeded Kazakh to a 2-0 lead straight away. Shvedova carried on with her impetus in the rest of the set and didn’t give any opportunity to the Hungarian opponent to make comeback. She broke Czink in the seventh
game one again and then comprehensively served out of the set at 6-2.
Tide turned in the next set when the 100th ranked Hungarian contender broke Shvedova early to fly to a 3-0 lead in no time. The world number 34 retaliated in the seventh game and eventually managed to level the scores
to 4-4 in the next game. However, another cracking break of serve from Czink in the 10th game left her stunned at 4-6.
The Hungarian underdog carried on with her winning momentum in the decisive set at well and broke her opponent’s opening serve to impose a 3-0 lead. Shvedova registered another break point in the fifth game, only to be broken in
the very next game to fall on her back foot once again. Czink finished off the proceedings with a break point in the eighth game, wrapping up victory at 6-2.
Shvedova has 58 per cent frist serve precision in the match, winning 24 out of 36 points on it but coughing eight double faults on crucial moments of the game. She had eight break opportunities in the contest but could convert
just four of them to finish on the losing side. On the other hand, Czink cashed in all of her five break points to register the first upset of the tournament.
