Melissa Franklin captures Women’s 200m back-stroke prelims: Day six – 2011 FINA World Championships
United States’ Melissa Franklin mesmerised the crowd with her performance on day six of the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Friday, July 29.
The session of the competition conducted the Women’s 200m back-stroke prelims, where Franklin put in her best effort and snagged the race with an impressive time of 2 minutes and 07.71 seconds.
Daryna Zevina of Ukraine secured the second spot with a winning time of 2 minutes and 08.35 seconds, while Elizabeth Beisel of United States finished third with a sterling time of 2 minutes and 08.40 seconds.
Belinda Hocking and Meagen Nay of Australian wound up fourth in a time of 2 minutes and 08.50 seconds. Sinead Russell of Canada earned sixth place honours in a time of 2 minutes and 08.92 seconds. Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe settled seventh in 2 minutes
and 09.03 seconds, while Shiho Sakai of Japan finished eighth in a time of 2 minutes and 09.25 seconds.
Sharon Rouwendaal Van of Netherlands was placed ninth in the respective meet in 2 minutes and 09.65 seconds, whereas, Elizabeth Simmonds of Great Britain settled tenth in a time of 2 minutes and 10.02 seconds.
Previously, Cesar Cielo of Brazil snatched the Men’s 50m freestyle preliminary heat with a victorious time of 22.03 seconds. While speaking about the splash, Cielo stated, “The swim wasn't much of a disappointment, and I feel I couldn't have done better.
I've done well with a lot of inspiration and concentration. I'm looking forward to some top speed tonight.”
Additionally, Sweden’s Therese Alshammar won the Women’s 50m butterfly preliminary race with a winning time of 25.68 seconds, while Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark was placed second in 25.88 seconds. Dana Vollmer of United States finished third on the podium
with a time of 25.98 seconds.
Tyler McGill of United States snagged the Men’s 100m butterfly preliminary heat with a triumphant time of 51.76 seconds. Japan’s Takuro Fujii finished second with a time of 51.82 seconds, whereas, Geoff Huegill of Australia rounded out the top three in 51.83
seconds.
