Melissa Franklin captures Women’s 200m back-stroke title: Day seven – FINA World Championships

Melissa Franklin won the title of Women’s 200m back-stroke meet, on the seventh day of the ongoing 2011 FINA World Championships on Saturday, July 30, in Shanghai, China.

These World Championships are the 14th Long Course Swimming Championships organised by the international aquatic sports governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).

Franklin pocketed the gold medal of the distant back-stroke swim, by posting a top fastest time of 2 minutes and 05.10 seconds in the final rounds. Her title winning effort was just 0.29 seconds away from the world mark of 2 minutes and 04.81 minutes, set by
a Zimbabwean swimmer, Kirsty Coventry, during 2009.

She was trailed by Belinda Hocking of USA, who remained only 0.94 seconds behind the gold medallist and appeared on the concluding wall in a second fastest time of 2 minutes and 06.06 seconds for silver medal. The top position holders were followed by Sharon
Van Rouwendaal of Netherlands, who was 1.72 seconds behind the second finisher and ended her swim in a third best time of 2 minutes and 07.78 seconds to accomplish the bronze medal.

In the meantime, Daryna Zevina emerged as the fourth fastest finisher of the four-lap event, as she stayed 0.04 seconds behind her former finisher and touched the finishing wall to post a fourth finest time of 2 minutes and 07.82 seconds. She was followed by
Elizabeth Beisel of USA, who failed to overcome Zevina’s effort with a margin of only 0.34 seconds and clocked a fifth fastest time of 2 minutes and 08.16 seconds.
Meagen Nay of Australia was the sixth position holder of the event, as she finished her swim in the respective meet and reported on the finishing wall a time of 2 minutes and 08.69 seconds. Great Britain’s Elizabeth Simmonds and France’s Alexianne Castel
were the last two swimmers to complete their swims, as they secured the seventh and eighth fastest spots, with timings of 2:08.76 and 2:09.07 minutes, respectively.

In addition, the winners were applauded by the crowd for their commendable swims and they also collected medals and accolades for their dominating efforts after the completion of the session.
