Melissa Gorman books her place for 2012 Olympics in London – Swimming news
Swimming Australia announced that Melissa Gorman has confirmed her spot for the next year’s Olympic Games, in London. The Australian Olympic Committee added that Gorman is the first Aussie swimmer to qualify for the upcoming event.
In order to qualify, Gorman was required to be placed in the top-ten spots of the Women’s 10km race, on the opening day of the 2011 FINA World Championships in the Open Water swimming meet.
In the corresponding race, Australia’s Melissa Gorman put in her best effort and earned fourth place honours with an impressive time of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 12.0 seconds. Owing to her scintillating performance, she booked her place for the upcoming 2012
Olympic Games, in London.
After the race, Gorman said, “To have qualified for the Olympic games is an amazing feeling. That was probably one of the toughest races I've done in a really long time. The water was so hot and I really just gave it all I had right from the start, so it
was pretty much 10kms of just all-out swimming.”
Elated with the opportunity, Gorman claimed, “It's such an amazing feeling. I’ll be able to go home and get in a really good preparation and focus on getting everything right for London now.”
Melissa grabbed fifteenth place in the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing, but she snared the gold medal in the Women’s 5km Open Water Swimming meet at the 2009 FINA World Championships, in Rome. Moreover, Gorman secured the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle
relay final at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, in Irvine.
In the 10km Open Water Swim, Keri Anne Payne snagged the golden crown with a winning time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 58.1 seconds, while Martina Grimaldi of Italy captured silver in 2 hours, 01 minute and 59.9 seconds. The bronze medal went to Greece’s Marianna
Lymperta, after she ended her swim in a time of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 01.8 seconds.
