Melissa Ingram pockets Women’s 200m backstroke gold – FINA Swimming World Cup, Tokyo
Melissa Ingram of New Zealand pocketed gold medal of the Women’s 200m backstroke on day one of the seventh stop of the 2012 FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup Series in Tokyo, Japan on Tuesday, November 6.
The Kiwi swimmer spoiled the party of her opponents in the eight-lap discipline and proved her mettle for the gold medal.
Ingram served notice of her talent in the 200m discipline and snared the title by touching the wall with a wonderful timing of 2 minutes and 05.39 seconds.
The gold medallist was chased by Marie Kamimura of Japan, who stayed 0.49 seconds slower and surfaced on the finishing blockade for silver medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 05.98 seconds.
Kamimura was traced by Jenney Mensing of Germany, who stayed 0.97 seconds slower and tapped the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 06.95 seconds.
The third position holder was followed by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, who was only half a body length away from reaching the podium. Hosszu remained only 0.48 seconds slower from upsetting her former finisher and touched the wall with an effort of 2 minutes
and 07.43 seconds for fourth position.
Subsequently, Hosszu faced tough contest from Mai Harada of Japan, who stayed only 0.05 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and posted a time of 2 minutes and 07.48 seconds for fifth place.
Sixth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Aki Yamashita of Japan, who was 0.29 seconds away from her former finisher and surfaced on the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 07.77 seconds.
Yamashita was chased by Polina Lapshina of Russia, who was almost 0.60 seconds slower and surfaced on the wall as seventh position holder by producing a time of 2 minutes and 08.33 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was obtained by Yuka Kawayoke of Japan, who was 2.05 seconds slower and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 10.38 seconds.
Furthermore, Ingram received huge appreciation from the audience for her alluring efforts in the backstroke event and received medal at the victory ceremony after the session.
