Melissa Reid, Laura Davies, Suzann Pettersen and Christel Boeljon qualify for the Solheim Cup
Top performers on the Ladies European Tour (LET) Melissa Reid, Laura Davies, Suzann Pettersen and Christel Boeljon have all qualified for the Solheim Cup scheduled in September this year. The group of four players has done splendidly well for the season
on the LET circuit and all have gone to win on the tour. The selection came after the European Points standings were finalized later after the culmination of the Ladies Irish Open supported by Fáilte Ireland.
Pettersen won the latest Ladies Irish Open with her phenomenal performance on the final day.
“It’s been a great week for all the Europeans so hopefully our captain has got a few answers that she was questioning herself. Hopefully we’ll get a good solid team of 12 good girls together and we’ll be back strong,” Pettersen was later talking to the reporters
after her victory at the Killeen Castle.
The Turkish Airlines Ladies Open winner, Boeljon is now safe at the fourth place considering her points on the list and owes most part of it to her two other runner-up finishes in the season. The last of the qualifying event will be starting next week the
Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland from August 18 to 20, at Archerfield Links in East Lothian.
Virginie Lagoutte-Clement, winner of last year’s Aberdeen Ladies Scottish Open, will need more than 30 points to dismantle Boeljon from the top and since there are now only 30 points left on the table, Lagoutte-Clement will not be able to make it into the
coveted Solheim Cup. Boeljon will be the first ever Dutch player who will be representing Europe in the Solheim Cup.
However, there is a still a small window of hope left for the next four players who can possibly qualify in the next Rolex Women’s World Rankings on Monday 29th August, after the rankings will be updated. World number 16 Maria Hjorth, Anna Nordqvist
currently ranked 28th and Catriona Matthew and Sophie Gustafson, who are both poised at 36th and 37th in the rankings have a fairly good chance of making it through.
Azahara Munoz, who is ranked 41st, and the sturdy German player Sandra Gal stationed at 42nd are also keeping their hopes high to make it into the Solheim Cup.
Reid believes Europe has a good chance of winning the cup this year.
“I’ve played team events before, not to this extent, but as amateurs and we’ve been massively underdogs and you come out on top. You see it all the time in sport where teams that are supposed to thrash the other one tend not to. I think that don’t underestimate
the way European golf is going because it’s very, very strong and there are a lot of great players coming up.”
Reid will be one of the strong players on the European contingent in this year’s battle for the summit.
