Melissa Reid claims her fourth LET victory at the Raiffeisenbank Prague Golf Masters
Melissa Reid won the Raiffeisenbank Prague Golf Masters this Sunday! This is the fourth time she has won a Ladies’ European Tour event.
The 24-year-old English player shot a 6 footer par on the 18th hole, managing to gain a one-stroke lead margin over Italy’s Diana Luna.
Reid was very calm. She considered the shot calmly and rolled in the ball with characteristic efficiency. It was an emotional scene, with tears flowing down her face and fans cheering from the stands.
The event was Reid’s first after the tragedy involving her mother’s death. Just four weeks earlier, her mother Joy, died in a tragic car crash in Germany.
While many commentators were expecting her to withdraw from the tournament, she surprised everyone and decided to participate.
The tournament was held in almost perfect conditions – sunny, with a breeze blowing across the links. Nevertheless, Reid faced tough competition from the participants.
The final round started with Reid having a one shot lead over Stefania Croce from Italy. The front nine was shaky, to say the least. However, Reid soon she scored a bogey down the third of the round. This moved her total to one-over 37.
Stefania Croce was not Reid’s only worry. Rachel Bailey (Australia), Joanna Klatten (France) and Diana Luna (Italy) posed difficulties for Reid at various points.
Soon, however, they fell to lower rankings as Reid slowly moved up the course. Croce, who appeared to be going strong, dropped down to the 16th position.
It was Diana Luna from Italy who finally gained a stroke’s lead on Reid. This happened after Reid missed a putt on the 14th hole.
Luna lost the advantage on the 16th hole. She putted thrice from a long range and the score evened. Reid scored a birdie on the 17th and then went on to secure the cup.
Commenting on Reid’s game, Luna said, “To be honest, I wasn't that nervous. I think with something like what's happened to my family and me the last four weeks, nothing really seems that difficult anymore”.
The win in Raiffeisenbank Prague Golf Masters highlighted Reid’s loss. She was scheduled to play in the Audi’s UniCredit Ladies German Open.
Sadly, her parents, on their way to the tournament, had a car accident. Both were injured and her mother passed away.
After collecting her fourth LET cup, Reid commented,  “Obviously it’s very special with what the family and stuff has been through the last four weeks, so you know, hopefully, obviously it is good news to the family and will bring a smile on our faces at
such a horrible time, so it means a lo.”.
Melissa Reid plans to head back home to UK. She plans to participate in the upcoming US Women’s Open, due to be held after two weeks.
