Melissa Reid posts her second tour win at the Deloitte Ladies Open
Ladies European Tour’s shining player, Melissa Reid throttled her way to the top in the final round of Deloitte Ladies Open to win the title one shot clear of the field. Reid had been without a win for the current season and was desperate to summit the leaderboard
once again.
The Englishwoman toppled Holly Aitchison’s lead in the opening rounds and made her move in the final round to win the title. Aitchison, after a stellar display of precision play in the opening rounds, caved into the immense pressure of the final holes and
carded a lopsided 76 in the final round. She stumbled on no less than five bogeys with just one birdie coming of the final round.
For 23-year-old Reid, the victory comes as a breath of fresh air and will definitely help her for the rest of the season. Her round included four birdies and two bogeys on a relatively calm day at the Golfclub Broekpolder near Rotterdam.
Reid was later talking to the reporters, “It has been a tough couple of weeks, really. The last four tournaments I’ve not played great and I’ve suffered with a virus and stuff. I said to my coach, Dave Ridley, I meant business this week. It’s just awesome:
an amazing feeling. I’ve not won for a year, so it’s good.”
Reid recorded her maiden title on the tour in 2010 when she won the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open at Antalya Turkey. She has done wonders since turning professional and remained one of the most consistent players on the tour. The player was hoping to clinch
multiple titles on the tour this year, only to end up finishing down the leaderboard.
Reid finished second for a staggering seven times since turning professional in 2008 and has three top-five finishes for the season. She is also hoping to make it into the Solheim Cup for this year, but with new emerging players posting consecutive wins
on the tour, the selection will be all the more difficult than expected.
Reid said she tried not to think of the Solheim Cup points during the round as her caddie helped her concentrate for most part of the game.
“I tried not to think about it. Obviously I knew it was going to be tough out there today but I stayed patient. Lee Griffiths, my caddie, was brilliant,” she added.
Three players finished tied for the second spot including Aitchison, Frenchwoman Caroline Alfonso and Swedish Caroline Hedwall. This was Aitchison’s career best finish, although the Englishwoman was disappointed with her final round performance. Reid signed
for winner’s share of €37,500 out of the total purse of €250,000 and has now soared to the second place in LET’s Henderson Money List.
