Melissa Reid posts her third LET victory at the Open de España Femenino, Spain – Golf news
Englishwoman, Melissa Reid pulled in another stellar performance on the final day of the Open de España Femenino at the scenic Costa Del Sol, Spain, to win her second Ladies European Tour title of the current season. Being part of the upcoming Solheim Cup
team, victory could not have come at a better time for the 23-years-old Reid.
Reid said after the win, “It’s my second win of the season which is obviously nice preparation before Solheim Cup. It’s let me know the things I need to sharpen up next week but all in all I’m happy with the way I’m swinging it so I’m a happy, happy girl.”
The event was tightly contested among young players on the LET, where eight players finished a mere four shots behind the lead. Reid had done well in the previous rounds to tackle the windy Spanish course and made her move earlier in the round to edge past
Lee Anne-Pace.
Pace stumbled on two bogeys on the back nine which crushed her hopes of winning the title. Reid admitted that if it had not been Pace’s late bogeys, the final round was probably headed for a Playoff. Reid later revealed her state of mind during the bout
and said, “I didn’t think Pacey would three-putt the 18th so I did think going into the 18th that I would need to birdie it to win, so in the back of my mind I was thinking it was going to be a playoff but it was nice that a par was good
enough to win.”
Pace settled for a joint second along with American, Beth Allen and local player, Tania Elosegui. Young Allen performed well at the event in search of her first LET win. She battled the hot conditions carding a final round of 72, and bagged the runner-up
share of € 26,308.33.
Italian Diana Luna and Veronica Zorzi finished for a joint third along with Finnish Ursula Wikstrom, trailing the leader by three shots. Becky Brewerton of Wales slumped to a joint 17th along with Denmark’s Line Vedel, Swede Louise Larsson and
Frenchwoman Cassandra Kirkland.
The LET calendar is now all set for the biggest event of the year, the Solheim Cup scheduled to start this week at Killeen Castle in Dunsany, where LET players will play against a strong field from the other side of the Atlantic. Reid, being part of the
European team, will be heading straight to Dunsany and will be hoping to get some light practice sessions before the weekend.
