  1. Wow what a trip! You sent me straight back to boarding school (primary) which is the last time I had Melkkos. I recall they used to add Sago (frogs eggs) to it. I have had more than enough Melkkos to suffice a lifetime. I think I will faint if I so much as smell it today.

It did not taste bad though, rather lekker, but very filling.  I am more nervous of that memory lane it will take me down.

  2. All the above answers is Melk noodles not melk kos

j**s, I haven't had this stuff myself since Tom van Vollenhoven played on the wing! Maybe I can get the missus to make me some too.

  4. Excuse my ignorance, but, what on earth is that?

Could a butter fingered fairy like myself make one and enjoy it as well.... would like to really know.

  5. I havent had them for ages. Thats dessert tonight! Thanks Darth

  6. Res - your answer is so funny!

I went to my sons class a few months ago and they were serving them porridge, thick heavy hot oats porridge ... and it brought back so many bad memories!!! I hated that stuff :) We never make it in my house - but apparently my son loves it!!!

  7. It seems like we all have our different versions of melkkos.  What Darth and Joppie have, is what I understand to be melkkos.  My mother used to make it with maizena and called it "maizena" How original !!.  We used to eat it with butter and sugar or cinnamon sugar, or hundreds and thousands, or apricot jam.

What errolcollen has, is what I would have called melksnysels.

But here is also a recipe for Melkkos, and it is similar to the one Darth and Joppie have given:

Lannice Snyman of Food 24 says:

    Melkkos

    Ingredients

    3 extra-large eggs

    3 ml salt

    500 ml cake flour

    Water

    2 litre boiling milk

    2 pieces stick cinnamon

    Cinnamon sugar

    Method:

Gently beat the eggs and salt together and add the cake flour. Mix well. Add just enough water to make a stiff dough. Knead well until smooth and elastic. On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough until 5 mm thick and cut out thin strips. Roll the strips in some cake flour. Bring the milk and cinnamon sticks to the boil. Add the dough strips in small batches, stirring continually. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 15-25 minutes until the strips are done and have formed a fairly thick milky porridge. Spoon into deep bowls and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Serves 6-8.

And then there is net another from roekeloos, in Afrikaans, but essentially the same as the one from Lannice Snyman. See that they called it melksnysels, melkkos en Slinger-om-die-Smoel (lovely name)

    Tkae your pick!

By the way, this site has a lot of lovely recipes, all in afrikaans.
