Melky Cabrera helps Kansas City Royals humiliate Colorado Rockies 16-8 – MLB Update
Melky Cabrera pounced two devastating homers as the Kansas City Royals crushed the Colorado Rockies 16-8 in the last game of the three-game interleague series at Coors Field in Denver on Sunday July 3, to avoid their series sweep.
"It happens quickly, you can get back on track quick," Royals’ manager Ned Yost said. "And we got back on track."
Cabrera launched two dazzling home runs. First, a one-run homer to open the outing while the second for three-runs was blistered in the third inning to take the lead to 4-0. It laid a solid foundation for the batters, as Mike Moustakas and Chris Getz each
scored an RBI single and took the advantage to 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
Rockies’ retaliated with a dazzling performance from both Carlos Gonzalez and Mark Ellis. Gonzalez drove in a liner to deep right centre-field for three-runs and Ellis hammered a 373-feet long two-run homer to cut it to 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
However, the Royals did not stop their swinging bat and kept on punishing the pitchers. Alcides Escobar, Chris Getz, Melky Cabrera and Eric Hosmer each grabbed an RBI single while Jeff Francoeur added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead
to an irrefutable 12-5 position.
The Rockies’ Gonzalez took his team again closer to the lead with his three-run 364-feet long homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, after this run, the Rockies’ bat went quiet and they could not gather even a single run in the later innings.
The Rockies, on the other hand kept on swinging. In the seventh inning, Francoeur scored an RBI to get his second run while Hosmer blistered 415-feet long three-run stunning grand slam to set his team into an unsurpassed 16-8 advantage.
It was a nightmare for the pitchers. The Rockies’ starter Jason Hammel conceded six runs on seven hits including two home-runs and walked one on just over three innings. He lost his eighth game of the season. Matt Belisle also allowed six runs on seven hits
in just under a single inning and closer Clayton Mortensen went for four runs on seven hits and walked one over three innings.
Eric Stults was the only Rockies, who remained scoreless over his one innings.
The Royals’ ace Luke Hochevar scattered five runs on five hits, walked three and struck-out three batters over four innings. Reliever Blake Wood also received three runs on a homer but managed to earn his fourth win throwing one inning.
Tim Collins and closer Louis Coleman did not yielded any run over their inning. Coleman struck-out three batters and allowed one walk and one hit over two innings.
A high scoring win will create some momentum in the Royals season in which they have lost 50 games. Their next contest with the Chicago White Sox is important for their survival in the season.
