Soo I'm a woodwind player so I don't know much about brass mouthpieces. I've played mellophone for a couple years in high school and I was able to use my french horn mouthpiece, but now I need to buy an actual mellophone mouthpiece for the horn I'm using in college. The recommended mouthpiece is a Holton Farkas MDC (medium cup). Is it any good? I've also been looking at Bach mouthpieces, but I don't know what the difference between all of them are. What's the difference between like, 18.3 mm and 19.5 mm (on any mouthpiece)? What is the difference as the size goes up? I understand it's the diameter of the mouthpiece, but does it make a big difference in the sound, and is a certain size easier or harder to play on? Any info you could give me would be wonderful =]

  2. I use the Holton MDC and the Holton MC with my Mellophone and they both work very well. The MDC has a more of a mellow and open tone than the MC does. I've realized that the bigger the diameter the more mellow the sound is, but if you get it too big it can sound worse. I think it's a bit easier if you play around with the ones you like till you find one. Everyone has their own preference to mouthpieces, just as in reeds.
