Question:

Melodies to play on the guitar?

I want to play some pretty melodies on my acoustic guitar.

Very simple, single-string notes, preferably no chords. I have difficulty with those.

Which songs could I play that are like this?

I want to play something pretty and calming.

  1. Hi Dark Spirit

Get yourself a Beatles book. It has proven itself over time and the choice is unlimited as to song choice.

  2. Firstly, you should definately learn chords. Don't learn how to do one thing, and then leave something else in the dust.

But, as for some simple melodies; try nursery ryhmes. They are easy to play and seem to calm babies fairly well.

  3. Single note melodies on guitar are nice but if you don't learn chords you're missing out on much of the beauty and richness of the guitar's sound, not to mention its potential for accompaniment.

Try learning to play fingerstyle, where you harmonize a melody on the treble strings with a bass line played at the same time with the thumb.

Ken Perlman has a couple of very good instruction books on learning to play instrumental pieces in finger style:

    Fingerstyle Guitar

    http://www.amazon.com/Fingerstyle-Guitar...

    Advanced Fingerstyle Guitar

    http://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Fingersty...

I taught myself to play out of these two books and I recommend them highly.
