Melzer/Petzschner beat Stakhovsky/Youzhny in third round – US Open Men’s Doubles 2011
Seeded at number nine in the tournament, the duo of Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Philipp Petzschner of Germany, cruised through the third round of the US Open doubles by defeating the duo of Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine and Mikhail
Youzhny of Russia, on Monday afternoon.
The contest was played on the Court 17 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the ninth seeded pair driving Stakhovsky and Youzhny out of the
competition with ease.
Melzer and Petzschner wrapped up a convincing victory in straight sets, settling the final scores at 7-6(3), 6-3, to make a berth in the quarter-final round of the last Grand Slam tournament of the current year. They took just
64 minutes to outplay the unseeded duo of Stakhovsky and Youzhny, displaying their amazing hard-court tennis skills to force their way to the round of eight.
Stakhovsky and Youzhny played brilliantly in the opening set of the match but tens to lose their focus in the later parts to let Melzer and Petzschner away with a comprehensive victory in the end. Both teams conceded 13 unforced
errors a piece in the competition but Melzer and Petzschner kept winning crucial points on regularity to come out as the winner in the end.
The ninth seeded duo had six break opportunities in the entire matchup but only two conversions proved sufficient to drive their opponent out of the US Open. Stakhovsky and Youzhny registered only one break point in the whole match
to let the other pair fly away with victory.
The opener took off with an exchange of serve breaks from both duos in the third and the fourth game. Melzer and Petzschner drew first blood to lead 2-1 but their opponents back fired at them in the very next game to bring them
down to even terms again. A regular game was followed, which dead locked the scores at 6-6, enforcing a tie breaker round into play. Stakhovsky and Youzhny crumbled in the decider and the ninth seeded pair took the opening set at 7-6(3).
After a steady start in the second set, Melzer and Petzschner gathered up their pace by registering a crucial serve break in the sixth game to lead 4-2 and then kept with their momentum to seal victory at 6-3. Melzer and Petzschner
will face the combination of David Marrero and Andreas Seppi in the round of eight to fight for a place in the semis.
