    I could not think of an "APPROPRIATE" definition of "membrane identity", however when I read the whole content of the above mentioned link, I was felt a little " at home".

    I think identity of a membrane is related with all processes taking place through the membrane and,  in which the enzyme GTPase plays a substantive and crucial role.

    But, first of all I suggest READING or scanning the over-mentioned article. It concerns the subject matter you have mentioned in your question.
