okay....there's this part in the book where chiyo/sayuri is getting prepared for her debut as an apprenticeship geisha. Anyways, she has to get her hair done up in a specific way- the split pear, and there is a red cloth tucked in the hair that is visible through the split. Chiyo says that one of her clients told her that the split with the red cloth showing through drives him crazy when he stands behind a geisha and can see it. He says he has "naughty thoughts" about what he wants to do to her. Chiyo asks "why?" and he tells her to use her imagination to figure out what the split could symbolize. The book never tells us what the split is meant to symbolize...does anyone here know...or have any ideas?
