Memorizing Qur'an Majeed with translation...?

Salaam

I find it difficult to memorize Qur'an with english translation, since my language is not Arabic. When the Qur'anic Arabic is translated to english, for me it is still hard to understand what exactly the Ayah means,, sometimes. Because of that, I read the same translated ayah over and over again and still don't end up memorizing. I am, and am sure many others are, the type of person who finds it REALLY hard to remember something without understanding it

Any advice on memorization of Qur'an?

Also, what do you call the one who has memorized Qur'an Majeed AND understands it?

From what I know...

Hafiz = someone who memorized all Qur'an

Qari' = someone who memorized Qur'an with Tajweed

  1. The Holy Quran is surprisingly a brief book. It has total vocabulary of 2000 words. For example word Qul(tell them) appears many times but u have to memorize it only once. If you master these two thousand words memorizing Quran becomes easy. Try this .May Allah be your guide.

  2. Only thing i can suggest is to not memorize the english, but be able to paraphrase.  Get a quran that has commentary, so it will help with the understanding.

  3. My advice: don't bother -- it is a waste of time.  It is far more important to understand it, and in particular to understand its errors, than it is to know the thing from cover to cover.

  4. wa alaikum assalam sister!

hafiz= one who has memorized the entire quran(he would obviously know tajweed)

qari = one who recites the quran with tajweed( all the rules of recitation).he need not be a hafiz

am a non arab too .. and this is what i did when i had similar prob as yours:

1)use the same quran always .

make sure that the alphabets are clear enough so you dont have to change the quran later .it must have the translations too (preferably - the translation by muhammad muhsin khan and taqi-uddin hilali.. )

using the same quran during memorization will help you have a photographic memory of the pages.(this happens even without ur knowledge)

    2)choose a qari from http://www.aswatalislam.net

download a one or two page surah to begin with .

play the first few verses ( 3 verses or 5 or....as you find easy to remember) and read it from your quran along with the recitor just like the way he recites it .*

repeat this a few times .. do not worry if you cant memorize it the same day ..just go on repeating the verses...the following day add 2 or more verses and go on this way...playing the surah and reading it with the qari .

believe it or not ...you will be able to finish the surah in less than a week .inshallah

by repeated reading of the same verses, you have a photographic memory of the page and by mimicking the qari you learn to recite it with proper tajweed (also you learn a "particular tune " ... which makes it even easiier to memorize and know when you go wrong)

3)download quran recitor software from http://www.shaplus.com (dont forget to download the mp3 along with it)

now as you play your surah on the software ,you will be able to see the word to word translations using your cursor .

write down the word meanings on top of the arabic words in your quran with a pencil in small writing.

now after every verse that you read , look at the word meanings(that u wrote) and then  the whole verse translation . this would make u familiar with the arabic words and their meanings.

you dont have to memorize them . as you read the verses over and over again (and see the meanings simulataneously) , you will remember what each verse means .inshallah

some qaris that you may choose from - hani-ar-refa , saad al ghamidi, ahmad ali al-ajmi .......

    * choose a qari whose recitation is easy for you to read along in the same manner

  5. W/salam.

Brother, Memorizing is one thing and understanding is another thing. I believe you feel the difficulty because you have the feeling that you can not do it without understanding Arabic. It's a Miracle of the Holy Quran alone that Allah (s.w.t) has made it easy to memorize. The whole of Quran is memorized by thousands of little children around the world who knew not a word meaning of Arabic. An Arab who can understand the Holy Quran takes the same time to memorize as the Non-Arab. So you keep memorizing it as well as learn and understand what's learned. You can either learn step by step or go into detail studies once you finished memorizing. I was memorizing at an young age when I knew nothing of Arabic other than reading the words. I still keep in memory what I have memorized Alhamdulillah and trying to learn their meanings which are ocean abyss and beyond. Also follow tips as listening to a same part your lesson that's about to learn by a good reciter you love. This really helps a lot. Also read some tips here http://english.islamway.com/bindex.php?s...

Note: Hafiz is one who memorized Quran and a Qari need not be a Hafiz always. He is anyone one recites Holy Quran in the way it has to be recited properly (Tajweed).

  6. Hafez = Someone who memorized the Qur'an.

Qari = Someone who knows how to prounounce it right on the money.

Best tip to memorise it is just keep reading it over and over again.

  7. If you know how to read and understand Urdu languge, then let me know. I recommend  I recommend Taiseerul Quran (Arabic Text with

Urdu Translation and Excellent Tafseer (Explanation in Urdu).  It is

translated by Maulana Abdul Rahman Keelani. It is available in

Urdu Bazar Lahore and Karachi also.  That will be excellent for your parents also if they can read Urdu. My e-mail address is in my profile.
